The Sparta Lions Club will host SpartaFest 2012 July 6 and 7. A concert will be held Saturday evening, July 7, featuring one of the original PLATTERS, Milton Bullock. Also performing will be Lion George S., his talented daughter Kim S., Bill J.; Randy A.’s group “For His Glory”, and bluegrass gospel “The Couch Family” from Elkin. The proceeds from the concert will go to visually impaired projects of the Club. Food and drinks will be available.

On Friday evening a corn hole game will be at the Fairgrounds. Adam & Michelle D. will help organize this game. The whole family is invited out.

Mrs. Sue Cole, district representative on Diabetes Awareness, presented a very educational program on disease. Diabetes affects millions of people; by 2025 it is estimated that 380 million, 1 in 3 by 2050 will be affected. Cataracts may grow quicker and other resulting diseases are retinopathy, glaucoma, blindness. NC ranks 13th highest in the nation and is the 7th leading cause of death. Over $2 million in grants has been given for research. Individuals can give memorials or honorariums dedicated to eye research. Sale of used pins has produced $130,000.

President Hedrick read a moving story about a man’s selfless service.

Alleghany Memorial Hospital requested support of their golf tournament. The group voted to give $100 for one hole.

President Hedrick reported receiving requests for donations for High Country Hospice Bowl-A-Thon on August 11 – the group gave $100 - And Alleghany Family Resource Center the group voted to give $100.

Marion A. did a program on Alleghany Connections' mentoring program. A group of certified retired teachers volunteer to mentor students in county schools. The teachers volunteer since the state has cut its financial support of this needed program.

Phil D. has made around $171 by selling chances on Camp Dogwood tickets.

President Hedrick thanked the Club for their expressions of sympathy on the death of his son. He read a story about how to measure a man on the life he lives.

Tail Twister George R. is making meetings more enjoyable by his jokes and antics.
